The honest answer is: it depends on how you drive, where you park, and how close you live to the coast. But San Diego has a few things going on that make our answer a little more specific than most.

The Coastal Problem: Salt Air

If you're anywhere near Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, La Jolla, or Coronado, salt air is quietly working against your paint and metal trim every single day. Salt accelerates oxidation and can eat into unprotected clear coat and exposed metal over time. Cars parked within a mile or two of the coast benefit from more frequent washes and a stronger layer of protection, like a ceramic coating, than cars parked inland in Poway or Ramona.

The Sun Problem: UV Fade

San Diego averages over 260 sunny days a year. Without protection, UV rays break down wax and sealants fast, fading paint and drying out interior plastics and leather. This is one of the biggest reasons a basic wax job only lasts a few months here, while a proper ceramic coating can hold up for years.

A Realistic Schedule

  • Daily drivers: An Exterior Detail every 4–6 weeks keeps grime and bug residue from bonding to your paint. A Full Detail every 3–4 months handles the interior buildup daily use creates.
  • Weekend cars and garage-kept vehicles: Every 2–3 months is usually enough, especially if you're already running a ceramic coating.
  • Coastal parking or street parking: Lean toward the more frequent end of these ranges. Salt air and tree sap don't wait for a convenient schedule.

The Shortcut: Ceramic Coating

If remembering a wash schedule isn't realistic for your life (it isn't for most of us), a ceramic coating is the closest thing to a set-it-and-forget-it option. It won't eliminate the need to wash your car, but it dramatically cuts down on how often you need a full detail, and it keeps your paint looking newer for years instead of months.
