Ceramic coating shows up in nearly every detailing conversation now, but the actual mechanics of what it is and what it does often get lost in the marketing.

What Ceramic Coating Actually Is

It's a liquid polymer, typically silica-based, that's applied to the clear coat and chemically bonds to it as it cures. That's the key difference from wax: wax sits on top of the paint as a sacrificial layer, while a cured ceramic coating becomes part of the surface itself.

What It Protects Against

A properly applied coating shields against UV-driven oxidation, resists chemical etching from bird droppings and tree sap, and makes the surface dramatically easier to keep clean since dirt and water don't cling to it the way they do to bare paint. It also adds a thin layer of hardness that helps resist very light swirling from normal washing.

What It Doesn't Do

Ceramic coating won't stop rock chips or deep scratches. It's not a substitute for paint protection film. It also won't hide swirl marks or scratches that are already there; it locks in whatever condition the paint is in when it's applied, which is why paint correction first matters if your paint isn't already clean.

Why Professional Application Matters

The bond only holds as well as the prep work underneath it. Any contamination, wax residue, or leftover swirl marks get sealed in permanently if the surface isn't properly decontaminated and corrected before the coating goes on. That prep work is most of what you're actually paying for.
