A Custom Correction Plan for Every Car
Paint isn't the same from car to car. Some clear coats are hard, some are soft and mar easily, and every car has its own history of washes and touch-ups. Using the same pad and polish on every car either leaves swirls behind or removes more clear coat than needed.
So we measure the paint and do a test spot first. Factory clear coat is usually only 1.5 to 2 mils thick, about half the thickness of a sheet of paper. We start with the least aggressive pad and polish that could work and only step up if the paint needs it, because clear coat doesn't grow back.

How It Works
What Paint Correction Does
A swirl mark is a tiny groove in the clear coat. The grooves catch light at odd angles, which is why they show up as fine circles in direct sun. Wax can fill them for a few weeks, and then they're back.
Paint correction (often called buffing) fixes the surface itself. A machine polisher and an abrasive polish level the clear coat around each defect until it's flat again, so light reflects evenly. Nothing is filled in or painted over, so the gloss doesn't wash off.
A 1-step correction (also called single-stage, or a paint enhancement) does this with one polishing pass. A 2-step correction (two-stage) adds a heavier compound pass first for deeper defects, then refines the finish with a polish.

Our Mission Valley Paint Correction Process
Every car goes through these eight steps. The pads and polishes change from car to car.
1. Full Wash
A microfiber hand wash, bug and tar removal, and the wheels and rims deep cleaned. Polishing starts with a clean car.
2. Clay Bar and Iron Decontamination
A clay bar and an iron remover pull out the bonded contamination and embedded iron particles a wash leaves behind. Polishing over that grit would only grind it into the paint.
3. Paint Measurement
We measure the paint before we polish. It tells us how much clear coat there is to work with, and where we need to be careful.
4. Test Spot
We try pad and polish combinations on a small section first and pick the one that gets the best result while removing the least clear coat.
5. Correction
A 1-step gets one machine-polish pass. A 2-step gets a compound pass and then a polish pass, working panel by panel.
6. Alcohol Wipe-Down
An alcohol wipe strips off the polish oils that can hide swirls, so what you see is the real finish and the coating goes onto clean paint.
7. 12-Month Ceramic Coating
We seal the corrected paint with a ceramic coating rated for 12 months, so the finish is protected from the day we're done.
8. Final Walkthrough

Signs Your Car Needs Paint Correction
These problems don't come off with a wash. For more detail, read our guide to the 5 signs your car needs paint correction.
Swirls in direct sun. Look at a dark panel in the sun from an angle. Fine circles mean swirl marks, and a wash won't remove them.
Flat paint after a wash. If the paint still looks foggy right after a wash, that's oxidation or fine marring across the clear coat, not dirt.
Water spots that stay. Spots that survive a wash and a clay bar are mineral deposits bonded to the clear coat. They need to be polished out.
Etching from droppings. A faint outline where a bird dropping sat in the sun is etching. Caught early, it usually polishes out.
Years without correction. Even a careful owner adds fine swirls over years of washing. If your car has never been corrected, it probably has years of fine swirls that polishing can remove.

Add-Ons for Your Mission Valley Paint Correction
These can be done on the same visit as your paint correction.
Headlight restoration. We sand out the oxidized layer, polish the lens back to clear, and seal it. Clear lenses also put out more light at night. More on headlight restoration.
Exterior trim restoration. Gray, chalky plastic trim is sun damage. A polymer-based treatment soaks into the faded plastic and re-seals it, so the black comes back instead of being covered for a few days by a dressing. Why trim fades.
Engine bay detail. Degreased and dressed, worked carefully around the electrical parts, never blasted with a pressure washer. More on engine bay detailing.

Aftercare
How to Keep Corrected Paint Looking Right
Rinse before you touch it. A good rinse floats off loose dust and grit, so your mitt isn't dragging it across the paint.
Use two buckets. One bucket of soapy water and one to rinse the mitt, so the dirt ends up in the rinse bucket instead of back on the car.
Skip brush car washes. The brushes carry grit from the cars before yours and put swirls right back in.
Dry with clean microfiber, and never wipe dust off dry. Dust is fine grit, and wiping it off a dry car scratches the clear coat.
Get droppings off fast. Spray the spot with a rinseless wash or detail spray first, then lift it off. On a hot panel, etching can start within the first hour.
Use a rinseless wash if you can't hose the car down. Spray it on and lift dirt off with clean microfiber, one panel at a time.
